"Men (humans) do not fail; they give up trying." Elihu Root
(Thought I'd make this an equal opportunity quote)
What a great quote. So appropriate and meaningful after my visit with my brother yesterday. He was lamenting the end of relationships, marriages, etc. (He's never been married. He was speaking of mine and Dad's and other people in general.) He said he was sorta glad he'd never gotten married. Doesn't seem to be worth the trouble if it's just gonna fail.
I'm sharing me response to him:
I don't consider my marriage a failure. We have four beautiful children and had some good times together.
But people change and things happen and sometimes its necessary to close one chapter in life in order to open another.
I don't consider it as giving up. To me there is a difference between giving up and giving in.
Giving up suggests retreating and accepting that "what is" is all there will ever be.
Giving in means accepting that "what is" isn't working anymore and releasing it, in order to create a different(and hopefully better) "what is."
