Dreams of our Youth

January 25, 2008 / by queenie

In our youth we carry the torch

Of passion and dreams and things to achieve.

Ready to tackle each new day with abandon and joy

Excited about the future and all that it holds.

Somehow it happens, our spirit is broken.

We let others lead our lives and tell us what we should do.

They know best. We can’t disappointment.

After all, passion and dreams are just a fool’s folly.

So we bury our dreams deep inside our souls

We hide our passion so that no one will see

The person who was so full of life has now joined the rest.

Society can add one more victim to her list.

We trudge on and do what everyone expects.

We stay busy, we stray, we hide behind facades

All in an attempt to forget the youth who had plans.

We discount our loss by reason of age.

The dreams never died. The passion still exists.

But we’re hiding from it, running scared to admit

This life isn’t what we wanted. Not what we planned.

We gave away our life to please others.

Where does that leave us? Feeling bitter or sad?

Angry or hurt? It’s different for each one of us.

What is the same for us all

Is we gave away our life to please others.
